BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management
Course Aims

There is a growing need for professionally trained people within the Equine Industries. Employment opportunities range from riding schools, competition and racing yards to tack shops and feed companies.
The BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management is designed to assist both practically and academically men and women beginning a career with horses, and those who wish to gain qualifications in order to progress to more advanced courses such as a Higher National Diploma or Degree.
The main aims of the course are not only to provide the practical and academic skills required to function effectively in the Horse Industry at the appropriate level but also to develop personal and business skills as well as a responsible attitude towards animal welfare.

Course Structure
The BTEC National Diploma is a two year course. All students are expected to reach BHS Stage II in Horse Knowledge and Riding (HK and R), including taking the Riding and Road Safety Test, some may complete the full BHSPI award.
The syllabus consists of seven course units:
Horse Husbandry 1 and 2
Equine Behaviour and Welfare
Business Management
Principles of Animal Science 1 and 2
Industry Experience
and the following optional units from which 9 are chosen:
Equitation 1A (Practical)
Equitation 2A (Riding on the Flat)
Applied Animal Science
Equitation 1 B (Theory)
Equitation 2B (Riding over Fences)
Equine Rehabilitation
The Equine Industry
Equestrian Teaching
Therapy and Competition Grooming
Event Management Equine Fitness and Training  
Within these units students will study the following range of subjects:
Riding Skills -practical and theory Feeding and Nutrition Grassland Management Stable Management
Health and First Aid Saddlery Business Studies

Course Assessment
Coursework is continually assessed throughout the year, by way of assignments, practical assessments and short tests.
Qualifications
Students completing all aspects of the course can achieve the following qualifications
BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management
BHS Horse Knowledge Care and Riding Stage 1, 2, and 3
BHS Riding and Road Safety
BHS Preliminary Teachers Certificate

Note: This course will run automatically, dependent upon there being sufficient students choosing it.
