French, German and
Spanish are studied to Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level in the
Modern Languages Department.

In the Lower Sixth students follow a course leading to the AS qualification,
taking three modules in speaking, listening and reading and writing
-all taken in June at the end of the Lower Sixth Year.
In the Upper Sixth students study for three further modules; speaking,
a coursework or literature option, and a final module containing reading,
writing and listening skills. All modules are taken in June. Modules
can be retaken if necessary.
In the department the emphasis is on the use of the target language
throughout the course whenever possible. All Sixth Form students have
at least one time-tabled lesson per week with our language assistants
who are foreign nationals from the country of whichever language is
being studied. Students are also encouraged to watch foreign language
television via our satellite system and to borrow foreign videos from
our library.
Students are advised to spend some time abroad and help is available
if required to find suitable accommodation if they are unable to accompany
a College trip.
What we offer
We are a well resourced and committed language department. We are aware
of the differing needs of students joining us from a variety of schools
and countries and we offer both encouragement and targeted help where
necessary .Students are expected to work hard, but we as a department
also work hard to ensure that our students enjoy their studies in languages.
