This stimulating
course of study examines change in both the human and physical environments
at a range of scales. from local through to global. Much of the work
is focused on change in the last 30 years. making it particularly relevant
to present day living.
The linkages between atmospheric processes. weather conditions. hydrological
changes, fluvial processes, soils and vegetation, together with man's
influence. are explored over both the long and short term time scales.
Our studies in economic. technological, social, demographic and political
change over the last thirty years, both in the UK and the rest of the
world, give students a strong understanding of the world in which we
live.
The interaction of man and his environment is examined through work
on population. resources and hazards, where such diverse and interesting
topics as the spatial distribution of burglary and the geography of
transmittable diseases. such as AIDS. are studied alongside the more
traditional earthquakes, volcanoes and other natural hazards.
A range of optional units and a fieldwork report enable students to
study selected topics in depth.
This is a demanding but fascinating course for anyone who has an interest
in how elements of the physical and human environment come together
in our complex world.
