English Literature
AS & A2 Level

Hand PenThe English literary heritage is important in many countries of the world, with its long history of the written word, and its importance in the development of literature as an art form. These courses encourage students to enjoy to the full famous and acclaimed texts from the past and present, learning to appreciate the achievements of writers of many different kinds and backgrounds. In acquiring an understanding of the literary tradition, students are encouraged to develop skills of psychological and stylistic awareness, so that their ability to make considered critical judgments grows with their knowledge.

Advanced Subsidiary
The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) course can be completed in its own right, or it can form 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A Level. Three modules are taken at this level -units 1, 2 and 3, beginning, as might be expected, with a study of Shakespeare, who, despite the fact that he wrote so long ago, has recently been voted "Man of the Millennium". It is still true that no course of studies in literature can ignore the enormous contribution he made to the richness of the drama of his time, and how important are the enduring themes tackled in his own poetic words. In unit 2, students study poetry and prose, examining at least one text written before 1900, so that a continuum of literary achievement begins to be established. The opportunity to commit thoughts and opinions to paper takes the form of coursework in unit 3, in which those who enjoy writing themselves have the opportunity to stretch their talents, as an alternative to text-based essays.

Advanced Level
Those who wish to continue their studies to the full A2-Level standard will take the AS modules plus units 4, 5 and 6. In units 4 and 5, there is more opportunity to study drama, prose and poetry texts from different periods, so that by the time students reach unit 6, they are able to tackle an extended essay. This final module, submitted at the end of the course, allows students to follow a variety of interests, from the Gothic Tradition to 20th century British drama, widening reading experience and encouraging individual taste in literature.

A course in the study of English Literature is of great benefit for anyone wishing for a career in fields such as broadcasting, journalism, creative writing and, of course, the teaching of literary subjects, but beyond that it enriches life, giving a unique access to the minds and imaginations of those who have shared their thoughts with us, transcending time and distance. An appreciation of literature is part of the cultural heritage which makes us accomplished adults, and the written word can bring us an understanding of the lives of those we have never met, but whose society or suffering we can come to understand. A good book does not just touch us for the length of an examination; it touches us for ever.
