Studying
chemistry at AS/A2-Level provides sixth form students with the opportunity
to learn, in greater depth, many concepts covered at GCSE. It explains,
in more detail. the varied and diverse ways in which the elements that
make up our world can be combined. It also examines a whole range of chemical
types, how they react with other substances and how their structure can
determine that reaction.Knowledge of atomic structure is at the heart of understanding chemistry and this, along with the way that structures bond together, forms a fundamental and fascinating part of the A-Level course. The grouping of elements by their atomic numbers is looked at in a section of work on periodicity and this reveals patterns in the way that different chemicals react. This work is developed through the study of specific groups of chemicals such as the halogens (chlorine, iodine, bromine. etc.), acids and bases. The effects of heat. motion and many other factors are investigated in areas as diverse as thermodynamics. kinetics, isomerism. redox reactions and transition metals. Completion of the A-Level Chemistry course gives the participant a thorough grounding across a comprehensive range of topics and is an ideal spring board from which to undertake scientific study at a high level. The course is assessed by a series of module examinations, which will be taken throughout the two years. in January and June. and by centre assessed practical investigations.
