Studying
biology at AS/A2-Level will prove to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
You
will learn about, and be fascinated by, the complexity of living things
and cover topics that have relevance to many of the burning issues of
the day. An ability to understand matters relating to genetics, human
biology and the effects that we have on the environment not only improve
our academic ability but also help us to contribute to the crucial debates
in our ever changing world.During the course a range of varied and contrasting subject areas will be covered. The building blocks of living organisms will be investigated through the study of molecular and cell structures. The function of enzymes and the processes of digestion will enlighten us as to how the body sustains itself through the nutrients that we consume. This ties in with other processes of life such as respiration and photosynthesis necessary for the perpetuation of life. Systems such as nerves and muscles are also looked at in considerable detail. With the topical issues of genetically modified crops and prevention of disease by genetic screening, the sections on the genetic code and gene technology are of particular interest to today's students. This area also leads us logically into discussion of ecosystems, how life can best be nurtured and how damage to the environment can be minimised. Many of the above topics are put into historical perspective by looking at the evolutionary process. The A-Level course in Biology is assessed by module examinations taken during the two years and by related practical investigations undertaken throughout the course.
