HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOLS

Mrs Mary James 1984-1988 Headmistress
We brought the Careers service brought up to date, we entered into a spirit of technology by establishing a special all white space age computer room and we introduced some new subjects such as Business studies into the curriculum. Lower Sixth House opened and conversion of old cubicles into single study bedrooms achieved.

Mrs Jean Town 1988-1993 Headmistress
The Decision to close Q.E. was made, in November 1990, I began to ring selected Parents to see if they could help with a problem; I was encouraged and sometimes surprised by the responses! A parent came over that very day, November 13th, his Wedding Anniversary. Mr Martin was very happy with the education of his daughter; his wife felt their house was too large. And so the problem was resolved: Queen Ethelburga's School was moved in September 1991 to Thorpe Underwood Estate under the patronage of Mr and Mrs Brian Martin. Mr Martin's enthusiasm know no bounds. The urgency of the building work, walls, services (including the sewer!), purchase of new furnishings as well as all the educational and boarding materials were under his care. The estate staff were busy: making sports gounds, adapting Chapels furnishings to their new home, bringing over whatever the staff needed, including the total contents of the new computing and science laboratories to be installed. Mr Martins promise to make Q.E. "The best equipped school in the north of England, set in beautiful surroundings" was fulfilled.
