Miss
Evelyn Young 1912-1950 Headmistress
The need for a good boarding school in the North was filled by Queen Ethelburgas
in 1912 September 27th. Led by Dr Foxley-Norris and supported by Mr R
F Pawsey they decided to build a school on an imposing scale. Lord Mountgarret's
interest was roused in the scheme and he made a very generous gift of
a site and £30,000 loan for the building.
First
Speech Day
October 21st, 1913, was a real landmark in the School's early history,
for it was the first big public ceremony
when we felt that we were definitely a School. The pupils who worked so
hard who painted the schools motto "LUCE MAGISTRA" as a surprise
for their teacher, had no idea they were starting a great tradition. Every
year since then the twelve pupils who have been in the School the longest,
form what is know as the "Luce" and wear the letters of the
School Motto at the dinner.
War
Time
In 1939 the school was commandeered by the H.M. Office of Works and for
the next six years housed various branches of the Army. The School moved
to Studley Royal on September 25th 1939 until May 10th 1946. The
first 40 years of the school history sees the buildings and equipment
almost complete.
