Situated
at the welcoming heart of North Yorkshire and encompassing some of the
most beautiful countryside in Great Britain, the District near Queen Ethelburgas
is a true Yorkshire rose. A colourful tapestry of market towns and farming
villages, historic haunts, leafy lanes, parks, gardens, rivers, moors
and dales rising to unchanging landscapes and clean fresh air.
The area is renowned
as England's Floral District. It covers over 500 miles of the Vale of
York, which has been a main thorough-fare from time immemorial. Prehistoric
man set up mysterious ceremonial circles and standing stones along the
Vale, Roman legions marched up and down it and the fortunes of the Civil
War Royalists and Roundheads ebbed and flowed over the countryside.
On the West horizon
are the Yorkshire Dales and the spectacular peak of Great Whernside which
is
surrounded by the high land of Nidderdale. To the east are the North Yorkshire
moors and Marston Moor where the last great battle of the Civil War was
fought in 1644. The regal town of Harrogate nestles amidst green countryside.
The District abounds in natural attractions. York
with it's famous minster and Knaresborough with natural beauty and infamous
caves highlight the charm of the area.
