In many subjects there is a tiering system of entry. In Mathematics there are three tiers: the Higher, the Intermediate and the Foundation, and in other subjects such as English and Science there are two tiers, the Higher and Foundation.

Open bookGenerally speaking, the Foundation level questions are phrased more simply and the level of achievement required is lower. With the Foundation level, there is a limit on the grades that can be achieved (e.g. in some subjects grade C is the highest grade possible). With the higher levels, the top grades are available, but, if achievement falls below a certain standard, then no GCSE is awarded. The thresholds for the different tiers vary from subject to subject.

We generally advise candidates on appropriate levels in the light of progress during the LV year and Mock examination results. All teaching is so designed that the highest levels may be reached by those capable of achieving them. Where necessary, pupils may be taught in Sets appropriate to their ability. Most pupils end up taking the Higher level in the majority of their subjects.
